The stone
The walls and vaults keep the character of rural architecture. Materials that give these rooms a plain, solid, recognisable presence.
Book
A 17th-century Salento masseria in the Parco di Torcito, at Cannole: courtyards, stone vaults, an olive mill and a spring-water well.
The roots of Masseria Piccinna go back to the first years of the 17th century. Local tradition ties this land to the old district of Santa Palatia, Byzantine in origin.
In 1748 the records describe a centre of Salento farming life: courtyards, houses, a tower, gardens, a trisciolo (the olive mill) and a spring-water well.
Today Serra di Torcito carries that story on through its cooking and its welcome. A way of keeping the past, by making it part of the present.
Once the days were spent in the fields; now people gather around a table. Time changes, the bond with this land stays.
In the first years of the 17th century the story of Masseria Piccinna begins, part of the rural landscape of Torcito.
The records tell of courtyards, gardens, houses and an olive mill: different spaces, held together by the rhythm of farming life.
The masseria is a meeting place once more. The cooking, the celebrations and the hospitality give voice to its new chapter.
The vaults of the halls and the open courtyard: two moods, the same character.

CANNOLE · IN THE LANDSCAPE OF TORCITO
At Torcito, what surrounds the table is part of the experience too. You only have to stop and look: the grain of the walls, the leaves of the fig tree, the colour of the sky above the courtyard.
The walls and vaults keep the character of rural architecture. Materials that give these rooms a plain, solid, recognisable presence.
The Parco di Torcito frames the masseria. A landscape that accompanies your arrival and stays in the background of evenings in the courtyard.
Indoors it meets the pale surfaces; outside it shifts as the hours pass. When evening falls, strings of bulbs draw a second sky.
Where it is and how long it has been here.
The masseria stands inside the Parco di Torcito, in Cannole, in the province of Lecce, in Salento. It is a few minutes from Otranto and Maglie, inland from the Adriatic coast of Salento.
The old Masseria Piccinna, today Masseria Serra di Torcito, dates back to the 17th century. The courtyards, the stone vaults and the original spaces are still the ones from that time.
